Vienna - conservative Vice-Chancellor, the Austria, said in a surprise announcement Wednesday that he was leaving political for reasons of health, of the end of the career of a charismatic and ambitious leader, some thought might one day lead the country.
Josef Proell, who is also relinquish his post as Minister of finance and Austrian people's party leader, has suffered a pulmonary infarction last month while skiing, and has been since in rehabilitation.
Speaking to a crowd of journalists in the Ministry of finance, Proell said that he took his decision after speaking with his doctors and realizing that he will need more energy that it could bring together realistic without risking his health condition.
"The decision was difficult, but it is the right one, said Proell to his first public appearance since hospitalized summer in the West of the city of Innsbruck."
Proell, an old father of three, 42 years served as the Minister of agriculture between 2003 and 2008 and also led Austrian farmer's association. He is the nephew of Erwin Proell, the powerful Governor of lower-Austria, who was widely regarded as his mentor during his early days in politics.
It is not immediately clear who would replace Proell. The leadership of the Party of the people was to hold a special session Thursday on the issue but was not clear whether a decision would be made so quickly.
The people's Party is currently in a coalition Government with the Social Democrats of centre-left who closely won the September 2008 elections.
