NEW YORK - the Associated Press published a story Wednesday on General Electric Co., which was based on a false press release by mistake.
The release of false to say that General Electric, responding to criticism on the amount of taxes she pays, would repay a tax refund 3.2 billion for 2010 for the Department of the Treasury.
The false release, which was sent by mail electronic to the AP, included a GE logo and a link to a website designed to look like the GE's Web site. The AP published a history of 90 - word based on the release. Thirty-five minutes later, AP removes history and advises its clients that the story was a hoax.
"The PA did not follow its own standards in this case to verify the authenticity of a press release," said AP Business Editor Hal Ritter.
Two groups of activists, we Uncut and The Yes Men, took responsibility for the hoax, according to Igor Vamos, which is identified as a member of the yes men. Groups seek to raise policy of taxation of the companies that they see as unfair, especially at a time where the Government is having difficulties with financing of social services.
In October 2009, members of the yes men held a press conference to announce falsely that the Chamber of Commerce of the United States had reversed its position on climate change legislation.
